Batubara is a relaxed wood-fire restaurant on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, a short ride south of central Ubud. Warm lighting, quiet corners and the smell of the open grill make it work for a date as well as a group dinner. It features in most of the 2025 and 2026 roundups of Bali's best steak restaurants.
The grill burns locally sourced coffee wood, which gives a softer, earthier smoke than charcoal. The Wagyu rib eye is the order, with coffee-wood-grilled Angus and local Bali beef as cheaper alternatives. The menu has an Argentine streak: start with crisp empanadas and pair the steak with a glass of Malbec.
Prices are among the most approachable for a proper wood-fired steak in Ubud, with steaks from around IDR 240,000. It is dinner-only, open daily from 5pm to 11pm, and bookings are taken by WhatsApp; arrive early for an aperitivo.
