Golden Phoenix (Kam Fung) has served Hong Kong-style Western food on Lai Chi Kok Road since 1969, when founder Lam Chi-keung, a former hotel cook, set out to sell steak ordinary families could afford. The Prince Edward original keeps its red booths, round tables and ceiling fans, and queues form from around 6pm. His daughters now run the business.
Steaks arrive on cast-iron hot plates, and staff pour black pepper or garlic sauce over them at the table so they spit and smoke. Sirloin is about HK$153 and T-bone HK$188, with ribeye, short rib and tenderloin also listed; add-ons include scallops, prawns and abalone. Meals come with bread rolls, borscht or cream soup, and coffee or tea.
This is a nostalgic, good-value outing for families and groups, not a prime-beef dinner. Other branches are on Shan Lin Road (Tsim Sha Tsui) and in Kowloon City, Lai Chi Kok, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Tseung Kwan O.
